ISLAMABAD, June 18, 2014: The National Assembly approved 119 Demands for Grants of different departments while rejected all cut motions moved by the opposition on Wednesday during 11th sitting of 12th session, says Free and Fair Election Network in its Daily Factsheet.
The opposition did not move any cut motion on 72 Demands for Grants for the departments of Commerce, Communication, Postal Services, Defence, Defence Production, Inter-Provincial Coordination, Law and Justice, Science and Technology, Industry and Production, Education and Health, Information Technology, Housing and Works, Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan, Ports and Shipping, Religious Affairs, SAFRON, Textile Industry, Railways and Investment. The Federal Minister for Finance presented all Demands for Grants.
The opposition moved cut motions on 22 Demands for Grants for Cabinet Division, 21 for Ministry of Finance and four for Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The lawmakers discussed cut motions for five hours and five minutes. The rest of the Demands for Grants will be taken up in the next sitting tomorrow.
The opposition parties walked out of the House for five minutes against attack on MQM female lawmaker in Lahore. Moreover, the members spoke on 20 points of order consuming 32 minutes of the proceedings.
Following are some key observations of the parliamentary business:
Members’ Participation in House Proceedings:
- The National Assembly met for ten hours and 26 minutes taking two prayer breaks for an hour and 27 minutes.
- The sitting started at 1109 hours against the scheduled time of 1100 hours, witnessing a delay of an hour and 9 minutes.
- The Speaker presided over the entire sitting while the Deputy Speaker was also present.
- The Prime Minister did not attend the sitting while the Leader of the Opposition was there for six hours and 49 minutes.
- The Federal Minister for Finance attended the sitting for eight hours and five minutes.
- The parliamentary leaders of JI, PkMAP, QWP, PML-F, BNP, APML, AMLP and PML-Z were present.
- Seventy-three members were present at the outset while 102 were there at the adjournment. A maximum of 185 members were observed to be present at one point of the sitting.
- Eight minority members attended the sitting.
- Seven members applied for leave.
