Raja Muhammad Zafar-ul-Haq is affiliated with the PML-N and elected on a general seat to the Upper House, and is the current Leader of the Opposition. He was elected as the Chairman of PML-N in 2000 to and is holding the position to date. He also represented Pakistan in the United Nations General Assembly in its 45th Session in 1990-91. Senator Haq held some prominent posts including the office of the Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Religious Affairs (1981-85), Federal Minister for Religious Affairs in (1997- 99), Ambassador of Pakistan to Egypt (1985-86), Political Adviser to the Prime Minister of Pakistan with the status of a Federal Minister (1986-87). Previously he was elected as a member of the Senate in 1991 for a term of six years. He was appointed as the Chairman, Standing Committee on Law and Religious Affairs of the Senate 1991-94. Additionally he was elected Leader of the Opposition in Senate from May 1994-1996 and the Leader of the Upper House in 1997-99. Six parties formed an Independent Opposition Group 2009 electing Senator Haq as its leader. At the moment he is also serving as a member of the Standing Committees on Defense, Foreign Affairs, Law and Justice, Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, and Finance.
