ISLAMABAD, September 4, 2018: The federal and provincial lawmakers voted to elect the 13th President of Pakistan on Tuesday, observes Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) in its Factsheet.
The election took place at the meetings of the Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) and the four provincial assemblies under the Article 41 (4) and the procedure provided in the Second Schedule of the Constitution.
Following are key observations during the presidential election:
Presidential Election in Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament)
- The voting continued from 1000 hours to 1600 hours in the National Assembly hall.
- Chief Justice Islamabad High Court performed the duties of the Presiding Officer.
- A total of 430 lawmakers voted in the election of the President.
- As many as six ballot papers were rejected.
- As many as 212 lawmakers voted for Arif Alvi, 131 for Maulana Fazl-u-Rehman and 81 for Aitzaz Ahsan.
Presidential Election in Provincial Assembly of Punjab (PAP)
- The voting continued from 1000 hours to 1600 hours in the PAP hall.
- Chief Justice Lahore High Court performed the duties of the Presiding Officer.
- A total of 351 lawmakers voted in the election of the President.
- As many as 18 ballot papers were rejected.
- As many as 186 lawmakers voted for Arif Alvi, 141 for Maulana Fazl-u-Rehman and six for Aitzaz Ahsan.
- Of 65 Electoral College votes from PAP, Arif Alvi secured 33 votes, Maulana Fazl-u-Rehman 25 votes and Aitzaz Ahsan one vote.
Presidential Election in Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (PAKP)
- The voting continued from 1000 hours to 1600 hours in PAKP hall.
- Chief Justice Peshawar High Court performed the duties of the Presiding Officer.
- A total of 111 lawmakers voted in the election of the President.
- As many as two ballot papers were rejected.
- As many as 78 lawmakers voted for Arif Alvi, 26 for Maulana Fazul-u-Rehman and five for Aitzaz Ahsan.
- Of 65 Electoral College votes from PAKP, Arif Alvi secured 41, Maulana Fazl-u-Rehman 14 and Aitzaz Ahsan three votes.
Presidential Election in Provincial Assembly of Sindh (PAS)
- The voting started 32 minutes behind the scheduled time of 1000 hours and continued till 1600 hours in PAS hall.
- Chief Justice Sindh High Court performed the duties of the Presiding Officer.
- A total of 158 lawmakers voted in the election of the President.
- As many as one ballot paper was rejected.
- As many as 100 lawmakers voted for Aitzaz Ahsan, 56 for Arif Alvi and one for Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman.
- Of 65 Electoral College votes from PAS, Aitzaz Ahsan secured 39 votes, Arif Alvi secured 22 votes and Maulana Fazl-u-Rehman none.
Presidential Election in Provincial Assembly of Balochistan (PAB)
- The voting continued from 1000 hours to 1600 hours in the PAB hall.
- Chief Justice Balochistan High Court performed the duties of the Presiding Officer.
- A total of 60 lawmakers voted in the election of the President.
- As many as 45 lawmakers voted for Arif Alvi, 15 for Maulana Fazl-u-Rehman and none for Aitzaz Ahsan.
