He published papers on Islamic political thought, political ideology in Pakistan and the philosophy of his great father, Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, which were published in national and international journals. During 1960–62 and in 1977, he was the delegate of Pakistan to the United Nations General Assembly. He began his career as an advocate in the Lahore High Court, later became Chief Justice of Lahore High Court from March, 1982 till October, 1986 and remained a senior judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.He was elected as Member, Senate of Pakistan in 1994 till 1999. Late Dr. Javed Iqbal made useful contributions to the discussions in the Senate over national and regional issues. Services rendered by him would be long remembered and his loss will be deeply mourned. While sharing the loss sustained by his family members and friends, this House expresses its deepest sympathies with the bereaved family.
