Islamabad, February 25, 2024: During the second sitting of its inaugural session, the Provincial Assembly of Sindh conducted the election of its Speaker and Deputy Speaker on Sunday.
The following are key observations of the sitting:
- Awais Qadir Shah of the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) and Ms. Sofia Shah of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) presented their nominations for the position of Speaker, whereas Mr. Anthony Naveed of PPPP and Mr. Rashid Khan of MQM-P were nominated for Deputy Speaker.
- A total of 147 members participated in the voting process for the Speaker’s election. Mr. Awais Qadir Shah (PPP) secured 111 votes, thus earning the Speaker’s designation for the Sindh Assembly, while Sofia Shah obtained 36 votes. The outgoing Speaker administered the oath to the newly-elected Speaker, Mr. Awais Qadir Shah. For the position of Deputy Speaker, Mr. Anthony Naveed received 111 votes, whereas Rashid Khan secured 36 votes.
- During the session, ten newly-elected members took their oaths, with nine belonging to the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and one representing Jamaat-e-Islami (JI). However, they abstained from participating in the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
- Furthermore, the outgoing Speaker announced four panel of chairpersons, comprising Mr. Sharjeel Memon, Mr. Saeed Ghani, Ms. Nida Khoro, and Mr. Ali Khurshidi.
- The session commenced 17 minutes behind schedule, lasting a duration of five hours and 40 minutes, including a 15-minute recess. Initially, 140 members were present, reducing to 135 by the session’s conclusion. Additionally, eight members elected to seats reserved for minorities attended the sitting.
- The Speaker announced that elections for the Chief Minister would be held on Monday, February 26, 2024.
- The next sitting of the Sindh Assembly is scheduled to convene on Monday, February 26, 2024, at 1400 hours.
