Islamabad, March 1, 2024: The National Assembly convened its second sitting of the first session on Friday, electing its Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
The following are key observations of the sitting:
• Mr. Ayaz Sadiq from the Pakistan Muslim League—Nawaz (PMLN) and Mr. Malik Aamir Dogar of the Sunni Ithehad Council (SIC) were nominated for the position of Speaker, while Mr. Ghulam Mustafa Shah of the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian (PPPP) and Mr. Junaid Akber of SIC were nominated for Deputy Speaker.
• A total of 291 members participated in the voting process for the election of the Speaker, with one vote being rejected. Mr. Ayaz Sadiq secured 199 votes, thus being elected as the Speaker, while Mr. Malik Aamir Dogar garnered 91 votes. The outgoing Speaker, Mr. Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, administered the oath to the newly-elected Speaker, Mr. Ayaz Sadiq.
• In the election for Deputy Speaker, a total of 290 members participated. Mr. Ghulam Mustafa Shah received 197 votes and was duly elected, while Mr. Junaid Akber secured 92 votes, and one vote being rejected. Subsequently, the newly-elected Speaker administered the oath to the Deputy Speaker.
• During the sitting, 13 lawmakers spoke on 18 Points of Order for a duration of two hours and 12 minutes.
• Despite opposition from SIC members, the House approved the motion proposed by a PPPP lawmaker to utilize the assembly hall for the election of the president and one vacant seat of the Senate.
• The session commenced 38 minutes later than scheduled and lasted for a duration of eight hours and 34 minutes.
• At the beginning of the sitting, there were 160 members present, with 67 members remaining until the end. Additionally, six members elected on minority seats attended the sitting.
• The Deputy Speaker announced that elections for the Prime Minister would take place on Sunday, March 3, 2024.
• The next sitting of the National Assembly will be held on Sunday March 3, 2024 at 1100 Hours.
