Islamabad, March 3, 2024: The National Assembly elected the Prime Minister on Sunday during third sitting of its inaugural session.
The following are key observations of the sitting:
• As many as two candidates – Mr. Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) and Omar Ayub Khan of Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) – contested for the office of the Prime Minister. Mr. Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif secured 201 votes and was declared elected as the Prime Minister while Mr. Omar Ayub Khan secured 92 votes.
• The Prime Minister-elect addressed the House for an hour and 24 minutes, while the runner-up candidate addressed the House for an hour and 56 minutes.
• Lawmakers belonging to SIC and PMLN chanted slogans against each other; leadership.
• The session commenced an hour and two minutes later than scheduled and lasted for a duration of five hours and seven minutes.
• A PML-N lawmaker, took oath of membership during the sitting.
• As many as 250 lawmakers were present at the stat of the sitting, 113 by the end of the sitting. Additionally, six members elected on the seats reserved for non-Muslims attended the sitting.
• The next sitting of the National Assembly will be held on Monday March 4, 2024 at 1100 Hours.
