A senior leader and provincial president of PML, Ch. Pervaiz Elahi has been elected to 14th National Assembly for the second time. In the 13th National Assembly, he has served as Pakistan's first ever Deputy Prime Minister. Previously he has continuously served as member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab since 1985, having been elected for the sixth consecutive term in general elections 2002. He functioned as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development during 1985-88, 1988-90 and 1990-93. He has served as Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly during 1993-96, and also acted as Leader of the Opposition. He has the honor to serve as Speaker of the Punjab Assembly during 1997-99 and also served as Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. In the 14th National Assembly, he is serving as member of Public Accounts Committee and standing committee on Defense.
